Must thank Sri Lanka Cricket and IPG Group for successfully hosting Lanka Premier League 2021 season,’ says Colombo Stars batsman Dinesh Chandimal

Colombo Stars star performer Dinesh Chandimal opened up on the franchises’ campaign at the Lanka Premier League 2021 on Sunday and said that despite making a few mistakes, the team can take plenty of positives from the season. Stars lost to Dambulla Giants by 6 wickets in the Eliminator and were knocked out of the competition.

Speaking after the match, Chandimal went on to thank Sri Lanka Cricket and the IPG Group for successfully organising the Lanka Premier League 2021 season despite facing several hurdles.

“We all know with the Covid pandemic, it is tough to hold a tournament like this one. So, I must thank Sri Lanka Cricket and the IPG. They have done tremendously well. They have organised well and hospitality and everything was superb,” Chandimal said.

On a personal level, Chandimal had a fantastic season as he smashed 277 runs in 9 games at an average of 46.17 and a whopping strike rate of 150.54. He is currently 3rd in the list of highest run-getters in the Lanka Premier League 2021. The Sri Lanka veteran explained how he enjoyed the new role that was given to him by the coach and the captain.

“Before the start of the tournament, the captain and the coach asked me to bat at no. 6. They gave me the finishing role. In T20 cricket, this is a new role for me. I think I did well for Colombo Stars this season. Unfortunately, we could not make it through to the final as a team. Overall, I am really happy about my performance,” he said.

Chandimal went on to sum up the season for the franchise. “I think we played some outstanding cricket throughout the tournament, but in patches. In some games, we made mistakes. So, it’s a mixed feeling. Sometimes, you are happy and sometimes you are sad. I think, overall, we have done well as a team.”

Chandimal further revealed the areas where Colombo Stars could have done better and admitted it cost them a few of the games this season.

“I think, as a team, we have gelled well. When we were batting, we could not click as a unit. That cost us games. Especially, in the first six overs, we lost two-three wickets, and we did get going in the first powerplay. That cost us most of the matches we have lost in the tournament,” he said.

The right-handed batsman further admitted that Colombo Stars were 20 runs short in the Eliminator after electing to bat. “I think, to be honest, we were short 20 runs. That’s what I feel. The pitch was not easy to bat, not like last year. The ball did not come to bat on this track. We were short 20 runs. That’s where we lost the game.”

Chandimal further went on to reveal his best moment from the tournament and praised some of the youngsters for their performance in the season.

“I think in the first round, the last game against Kandy was a crucial game for us. After we won the game, everyone was over the moon. So, I think that was the best moment for us in the tournament,” he said.

“We found some new young talents this year such as Jeffrey Vandersay and Ashan Priyanjan. So, we have to take a few positives from the tournament, and I am sure, the franchise will be looking for them to perform next year as well,” Chandimal signed off.

Wahab Riaz, Shoaib Malik reveal interesting secrets about each other: Eats 6 times a day, even at 3 am

Jaffna Kings stars Shoaib Malik and Wahab Riaz sat down for a frank conversation on the sidelines of the Lanka Premier League 2021 season where the two veterans Pakistan cricketers revealed interesting and hilarious tidbits about each other. Riaz and Malik participated in the “spray challenge” as they answered a range of questions about each other.

Shoaib Malik, during the fun chat, went on to reveal why the Indian tennis star and his wife, Sania Mirza, does not like to cook for him. The two players were asked about who is fussier about food, and Malik said: “Ask this question to my wife. Then you get a detailed answer. That’s why she does not know how to cook and she orders from outside. Because I am fussy.”

When asked about who was lazier among the two players, Malik was quick to spray water on Riaz. “Because Riaz is a fast bowler, and he needs a lot of energy. Maybe that’s why he is lazier,” he said.

Malik also credited the Pakistan fast bowler to have a messier kitbag among the two. “He is an allrounder. He carries more bats than a batsman carries,” Malik said, laughing.

Wahab went on to say that Malik has a better sense of humour among the two, but also cheekily added: “At times, he says somethings, and he laughs and nobody responds.”

When asked who is a bigger foodie, it was revealed by the two that Malik eats 6 times a day. “Even at 3 am in the morning, there will be a club sandwich in his room,” Riaz revealed.

“I may eat six times a day, but I take small meals,” Malik responded.

Wahab Riaz also described Shoaib Malik as the bigger “party animal” among the two and revealed why their plans to party in Karachi this year could not come to fruition.

“He committed to me that he and I will be in Karachi, and we will have a lot of fun. But thank god, his name was in the T20 World Cup squad. He made a lot of plans with me. But nothing paid off,” Wahab said, laughing.

Meanwhile, Jaffna Kings have already reached the playoffs in Lanka Premier League 2021 with a win over Dambulla Giants on Monday. They will face off against Colombo Stars on Thursday.

Wahab-Riaz-celebrates-with-teammates

Wahab Riaz names Shaheen, Bumrah, Starc in list of current best fast bowlers, rates Rohit, Babar, De Villiers as top batsmen

Jaffna Kings fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who has already picked five wickets in three games at the ongoing Lanka Premier League 2021 season, went on to name his picks for top fast bowlers and batsmen in the world at the moment, and he included India pacer Jasprit Bumrah and opening batsman Rohit Sharma in the list.

In a recent interaction, Riaz was asked to name some of the best fast bowlers in the world at the moment, and he went on to praise Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mitchell Starc.

“They have a lot of capability. They read the game and execute their plans really well. If they require yorkers, or if they require slow ones, they would read the wicket and bowl accordingly,” Riaz said.

The Pakistan speedster was also asked to name the batsmen he finds difficult to bowl to and he picked AB de Villiers’ and also explained the reasons behind the same.

“There are a lot of such players like Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam who are hard to bowl to. But one player I have always been afraid to bowl to is AB de Villiers. He always knows what is coming next from me. He reads the game well, and always plays well against me,” Riaz added.

The Pakistan speedster further went on to describe his Jaffna Kings teammate Wanindu Hasaranga as the best leg-spinner in the world right now and credited him for the team’s success this season so far.

“If I am honest, Wanindu Hasaranga is one of the best leg-spinners right now in the world. Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana have been really good this season for our team. They really set the tones in the powerplay overs by taking wickets and restricting the opposition,” Riaz said.

Kings have won 4 out of 5 games so far in the season and are currently lying at the top of the table. The defending champions Kings had lost their first game against Galle Gladiators but have bounced back superbly since then.

“We learned from the mistakes we made in our first match. Now we are trying to cover all those basics. Everybody is ticking every box and that’s why we are winning as a team,” Riaz said.

Riaz further went on to praise the Kings management for packing up a stacked squad this season with plenty of options on the bench.

“Hats off to Jaffna coach and captain who have selected this team knowing the conditions and what combinations this team needs. The good thing is that everybody is responding well to all of them,” Riaz said.

Speaking on the team’s game plan to defend the title, Riaz said that they are making plans game by game and not thinking far ahead.

“You have to play good cricket throughout the tournament. You cannot say you are the favourites in the tournament as that can put you on the back foot. I can see the hunger in boys to win. We are thinking about one game at a time. We are not thinking about championship or too far ahead,” he said.

The veteran pacer further went on to praise the Lanka Premier League tournament for giving a chance to youngsters to learn from some of the best cricketers in the world.

“It’s great exposure for youngsters as they will learn to play against some of the best players in the world. They will share the dressing room with senior players like Thisara Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Perera, and gain experience. That is the exposure you require to make an impact at the international stage,” he signed off.

Ravi-Bopara--(4)

‘The Lanka Premier League is definitely going to have a massive impact on Sri Lankan cricket,’ said Ravi Bopara

Ravi Bopara, who was adjudged the Player of the Match for playing a watchful innings of 34 runs from 39 balls and helping his team Kandy Warriors defeat Galle Gladiators by 5 wickets in the Lanka Premier League on Saturday, expressed that the franchise tournament will definitely help Sri Lanka to find quality cricketers in their nation.
“I think the Lanka Premier League is definitely going to help Sri Lanka cricket. Whenever a league has been formed in any country, that league has helped that nation produce better cricketers, especially in the T20 format. Look at what happened to India, look at what happened to England, look at how good Pakistan were in the ICC T20 World Cup. I knew they were going to be good because they had such good quality. When you have leagues, you find players that would’ve never come into the system. You’ll see the impact of the Lanka Premier League in 3-4 years. We are already seeing talent coming through from Sri Lanka, players like Wanindu Hasaranga are good cricketers,” said Bopara.
When asked about his own performance in the LPL match against Galle Gladiators, Bopara said, “It was a difficult wicket to bat on. The key thing for us was to get to our target. We lost three games in a row before this game. My job was to make sure that I am there at the end. During the time-out, the Coach and the Captain told me not to play any big shots and asked me to be there till the end. So that was my job. If I was playing for my own ego then I would’ve scored at a faster rate, but I would have probably played a bad shot and got out and put the team in trouble. Once I got set, it was my job to take the team over the line.”
The all-rounder also expressed that he enjoys low-scoring games, “I love it when the scores are around 130-140, it’s a tight game and it’s a struggle to bat. These games are more exciting for me. When a team scores 180-200, sometimes the other team gets bowled out for 130, trying to hit fours and sixes. It can be difficult to curb your natural style of batting on a wicket like this, but after training so much over the years, it gets you ready for this kind of stuff. If you are only hitting sixes during training then that’s the only way you can play, but if you are also developing the skill of taking singles and hitting boundaries, then you have an all-round game. You know you can fit in any situation.”
Bopara added that it’s very important for the Kandy Warriors to build on their victory against the Gladiators, “It’s very important for us to attain the momentum. There are a lot of teams that start slowly in various competitions. If you look in the IPL, sometimes the Mumbai Indians start really slowly and all of a sudden, they catch form in the second half and go to the top. It has happened so many times. Hopefully, this happens to us as well. We need to win nearly every game now. We have to win at least three matches in our last four matches to qualify for the next stage of the tournament.”
