Lanka Premier League 2021 takes off with a glitzy opening ceremony; Sri Lanka Prime Minister and Sports Minister grace the event

The T20 fever officially hit the islands of Sri Lanka on Sunday as the second season of the Lanka Premier League took off with a glitzy opening ceremony in front of a host of fans at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The culture and the tremendous passion for cricket in Sri Lanka was on display as various artists performed to the tune of the Lanka Premier League official song ‘Ekwa Jayagamu’ rendered by Bathiya and Santhush’, Yohani, , Sajitha, and ADK.


Amongst the colour and fervour of the massive opening ceremony, the Lanka Premier League witnessed the presence of Sri Lanka Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa and General Shavendra Silva. Paralympic Gold Medalist Dinesh Priyantha also graced the event and declared the T20 franchise tournament open.


Commenting on the occassion, Angelo Mathews, Captain of Colombo Stars and Sri Lankan legend said, “You know, all the nations are having this kind of a tournament and it benefits the country’s cricket because you produce so many young players and you give them the exposure playing with international stars so yeah, its a great exposure for all of them. LPL is a great platform for the budding stars and it is going to benefit Sri Lanka cricket a lot.”

The Lanka Premier League, which will have five teams competing for the trophy – Galle Gladiators, Jaffna Kings, Dambulla Giants, Kandy Warriors and Colombo Stars, is all set to take even bigger strides this year with the attraction of a  host of sponsors including notwithstanding Wolf777 News, Sky247 and FairPlay. The flagship T20 tournament of Sri Lanka will also be telecast to cricket fans all over the world. The Galle Gladiators gained the first mover advantage in the opening match of the Lanka Premier League 2021 on Sunday after they defeated Jaffna Kings by 54 runs in Colombo. Gladiators Captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored 56 runs off 31 runs and helped his team post a total of 164/7. Thereafter, Samit Patel picked up figures of 3/21 as the Gladiators bowled the Jaffna Kings out for 110.


Player of the Match Samit Patel said, “LPL is a great tournament to play in. It has great pitches and some very special people playing it. Great Talent Sri Lanka have got here and experience and exposure like this will make them even better.”


A total of 24 matches will be played in the Lanka Premier League 2021. The Final Round Games will see the top two teams in the points table playing the Qualifier 1, whilst the 3rd and 4th placed teams on the table playing in the ‘Eliminator.’


The winner of ‘Qualifier 1’ will directly go into the Final, whilst the loser of the ‘Qualifier 1’ will play against the winner of the ‘Eliminator’ in the ‘Qualifier 2’, and the winner of that game will go into the Final. The Final will be played on 23 December 2021 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Hambantota.

Lanka Premier League Launches Official Song ‘Ekwa Jayagamu’ for 2021 Season

The Lanka Premier League organisers, the IPG Group released the ‘Ekwa Jayagamu’ LPL song sung by a stellar line-up of artistes at the launch event, in support of the teams. Sri Lanka’s premier connectivity provider, Dialog Axiata PLC, has also come forth to power the 2021 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) as the official Telecommunication Partner for the tournament.

LPL is a world-class cricket tournament set to feature the best in talent from across the world and also acts as a proving ground for Sri Lanka’s budding cricketers, providing them with the chance to display their skill and showcase the wide array of local talent, setting them on the path to featuring for the national team. “Ekwa Jayagamu” the theme song for the tournament, features a number of Sri Lanka’s most famous pop-stars, which includes ‘Bathiya and Santhush’, to Yohani, Sanka, Sajitha, Umaria and ADK.

The tourney will commence on December 05th 2021, while the grand finale will be played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Sooriyaweva, Hambanthota on December 23, 2021 from 7:30 pm. The five franchise teams, Colombo Stars, Dambulla Giants, Galle Gladiators, Jaffna Kings and Kandy Warriors will battle it out on 24 league and knockout matches in the 2021 tourney. In the inaugural LPL in 2020, Jaffna Stallions, skippered by the experienced Thisara Perera, defeated the Galle Gladiators to clinch the coveted title.

Commenting on the launch of the LPL, Minister of Youth and Sports, Namal Rajapaksa, stated, “Developing our young cricketers is a top priority for Sri Lanka, and we look forward to the upcoming Lanka Premier League as an avenue to accelerate their development. I am thankful to Dialog Axiata for hosting the launch event, and also look forward to a tournament that is sure to be filled with memorable matches”.

Speaking at the launch event, Mohan De Silva, Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket said, “High-calibre tournaments such as the LPL act as an incubator for SLC to identify and nurture players who will one day represent the national team and bring glory to the country at the international level. Budding players get much-needed exposure playing with and against foreign players which will shorten their learning curve. I wish the LPL the very best for a successful tourney.”
